Barcamp Milwaukee

This is my second BarCamp, but my first in Milwaukee.

Chicago to Milwaukee isn’t too bad of a trip, especially on Amtrak, which lets me plug my laptop in and get some stuff done. Specifically, it let me work on my presentation (Write your own Bayesian classifier!).

1 I tried to get the presenter to lead us in a rousing chorus of “Hadoop! Hadoop! Hadoop is on fire! We don’t need no Java let the (so-and-so) burn!”. Sadly, it was not to be.

2 Which i lost for the team, making it to the final three and choosing the wrong bad guy.

It’s been fun so far. I attended (and eventually helped) a presentation on Haskell by Dave from Geek Book Club. I saw a demo of Hadoop[1], which looks more promising than i honestly expected. Someone made elevators dance. And there was a rousing game of Werewolf[2].

As pleasant as the space was, though, i didn’t relish sleeping in it. Luckily, i have a friend in the area who’s providing electricity, connectivity, and a futon. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s sessions, and to the train ride back tomorrow evening.

I’d really like to see a post describing how Milwaukee & Chicago differ. We’re both in the Midwest, but I’ve been told the culture is still pretty different between the two.
